Lib Dem Councillors deliver ULEZ petition to Mayor of London

13 Jul 2023

A petition by Lib Dem-run Sutton Council and signed by over 10,500 residents has been presented to the Mayor of London, calling on him to think again on ULEZ expansion.

The petition was presented to City Hall by Sutton Councillors.

It urges the Mayor to halt his expansion, bring in a proper scrappage scheme and improve Sutton's public transport.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, the Lib Dem Leader of Sutton Council who led the petition presentation at City Hall, said:

"Thank you to the over 10,500 residents who signed our petition.

"They are all clear that pressing on with ULEZ expansion during the worst cost of living crisis in a generation is completely unfair.

"Thousands of local residents, businesses and charities feel their genuine concerns and fears are being ignored by the Mayor.

"He needs to start listening."

Cllr Bobby Dean, Lib Dem MP candidate for Carshalton & Wallington, added:

"Lib Dems want to see action on air pollution, but the Mayor’s planned ULEZ expansion just isn't fair.

"It ignores the poor state of public transport in our borough and the scrappage scheme is totally insufficient - even some of his Labour colleagues admit it.

“With so many people struggling right now, more needs to be done to help all of those that will struggle to change their cars. Simply punishing them with a new charge will not help.

"That's why we've taken a stand and handed in our petition to show him what Sutton thinks. The Mayor needs to listen."
