Local Liberal Democrat councillors have been working closely with Sutton Council and wildlife charities to protect wildlife and get Carshalton Ponds back to where they should be.

Following the sudden draining of the Ponds, councillors have been pressing for action to identify and resolve the problem, while ensuring that local wildlife is protected.

They have been working directly with wildlife charities to ensure their expertise and advice are taken on board by the Council and have since received assurances that wildlife in the Ponds will be looked after.

Waterfowl, including ducks, are very adept at moving to alternative water and food sources, while the cooler weather at this time of year means there is less risk to local wildlife.

Following concerns raised by residents about the much-loved carp that inhabit the canal, councillors worked with the Council and Environment Agency to ensure the fish were safely relocated to the nearest suitable location in Beddington Park's lake.

Councillors have also been working with civil and environmental engineering specialists to investigate whether there are any further issues beyond those already identified by the Council.

Cllr Jake Short, Carshalton Central, said, "We are all working incredibly hard to keep Carshalton special and get the Ponds back to where they should be.

“A huge thank you to all of those working with wildlife charities like the Swan Sanctuary and Wallington Wildlife Rescue who have all been incredible, and to the Council staff who are working around the clock to get answers and sort the problem out.”
