Thames Water bosses rake in £8.5 million while the firm dumps raw sewage in the Wandle

Sewage flowing out of a drain into a river

Local Liberal Democrat candidate Bobby Dean has slammed the “eye-watering” £8,553,000 paid out to Thames Water bosses over the last three years.

Over the same period, the firm has dumped raw sewage into the local River Wandle on 25 separate occasions.

Liberal Democrats have called for a ban on all CEO bonuses within the water industry and for firms to be reformed into “public benefit companies”. These reforms would force the companies to put the environment before profits and ensure their boards include environmental experts.

Bobby Dean, who is running to be Carshalton & Wallington’s next Lib Dem MP, said:

“The River Wandle is being pumped full of sewage, all while Thames Water’s bosses hand themselves insulting pay-outs. The whole thing stinks. These salaries and perks have reached eye-watering levels, yet Conservative Ministers refuse to act.

“It is time to rip up Thames Water so it no longer puts profit before the environment. The firm is clearly not working how it should and is not listening to local concerns on sewage discharges.

“This is a scandal and it's happening on the Government’s watch. When will the Conservatives finally get tough on these polluting and profiteering firms?”
