Outrageous Mayoral attempt to cut affordable housing in Sutton

The Mayor of London has published his draft London Plan, which for the first time includes proposals to set the affordable housing target across the city on a borough by borough basis.

In Sutton, his proposal would lower the affordable housing target from 35% to 20%. If implemented, it would weaken the requirement on private developers to ensure that a significant proportion of new housing is built to the benefit of local families.

Responding to the news, Councillor Jake Short (Chair of the Housing, Economy and Business Committee), said:

“Sutton has just produced our own local plan for 35% affordable housing, and the Council itself has an excellent track record of delivering 100% affordable housing on sites we own.

"Sutton is going to defend this local plan to the government regardless of what the Mayor has said.

“We believe a 35% affordable housing target is what Sutton needs, for the benefit of so many people in our community”.
