Worcester Park commuters are set to find out within weeks whether South Western Railway has listened to calls for a better local train service, with proposals for a new timetable expected at the beginning of December.

Local residents and Liberal Democrat campaigners have spent more than two years pressing for improvements at Worcester Park, where services have never fully recovered from cuts made during the pandemic.

The campaign has called for more frequent and reliable trains, including a return to four services per hour in each direction during the busiest parts of the day.

Hundreds of residents responded when SWR launched an early engagement exercise on its future timetable earlier this year. Worcester Park was subsequently identified as one of the areas with the highest levels of engagement in the country, giving local commuters a significant opportunity to make clear what improvements they want to see.

The campaign has involved local Liberal Democrat councillors alongside Sutton and Cheam MP Luke Taylor, who has repeatedly raised Worcester Park’s train service with SWR and Government ministers since his election in 2024.

That has included parliamentary questions on late-night services, a Commons motion highlighting cancellations, overcrowding and reduced services, meetings with senior SWR representatives and repeated interventions in Parliament on reliability and capacity.

Earlier this year, Worcester Park’s newly elected Liberal Democrat councillors joined the push for residents to take part in SWR’s timetable engagement, encouraging commuters to share their experiences directly with the railway.

The latest development follows a meeting between Luke Taylor MP and SWR representatives Chris Rowley and Matthew Evans to discuss the operator’s new Improving Your Railway plan.

SWR says the plan is focused on improving reliability across the network, with a new approach built around tracks, trains, timetable and staff. The railway has also committed to developing a more resilient timetable as it moves towards the new Great British Railways structure.

At the meeting, Luke again pressed the case for restoring more frequent services through Worcester Park, particularly during peak hours.

Luke Taylor MP said:

“People in Worcester Park have put an enormous amount of effort into making their voices heard, and now we are finally approaching the point where we will find out whether SWR has listened.

“Residents have been incredibly clear about what they need: more frequent trains, less overcrowding and a service they can actually rely on.

“I want to see Worcester Park return to four trains per hour in each direction, particularly at peak times. After years of reduced services, that would be a real sign that the railway is finally moving in the right direction.

“I want to thank everyone who responded to the early consultation. Worcester Park had one of the strongest responses anywhere on the network, and that gives us a powerful case for change.

“When SWR publishes its proposals, we will look at them carefully. If they deliver what residents have been asking for, that will be very welcome. If they do not, we will keep fighting for the train service Worcester Park deserves.”

SWR’s timetable proposals are expected to be announced at the beginning of December, ahead of a further public consultation.

Local Liberal Democrats say they will encourage residents to take part again once the proposals are published, to make sure Worcester Park’s voice continues to be heard before the new timetable is finalised.
