Council opposes plans to increase waste activity

28 May 2022

Sutton Liberal Democrats have reiterated their opposition to Viridor’s application to the Environment Agency to expand the capacity of the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF/ incinerator).

Sutton Council is proud of its record in reducing waste sent to landfill, including having among the highest recycling rates in London, but the expansion will not be in residents’ interests.

Lib Dem Chair of Environment and Sustainable Transport, Barry Lewis said:

“Although the ERF has cut carbon emissions by 128,000 tonnes per year compared to the previous landfill operation, we are concerned by the effect expansion would have on traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

“Your local Lib Dem team will continue to fight against the expansion of the ERF.”
