"Clock's Ticking, Andy" says Luke Taylor MP as he calls out new PM's silence on PR

Luke Taylor MP has called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to break his silence on proportional representation, warning that the Government must not miss its chance to make every vote count.

In a video published this morning, the Liberal Democrat MP for Sutton and Cheam said: “We’ve not heard a word from PM Burnham yet about making votes matter.”

Luke argued that electoral reform is central to restoring confidence in politics and ensuring that Parliament better reflects the views of people across the country - a position Andy Burnham has previously held himself.

“He can’t squander this chance to fix our democracy, stop more than half of votes being wasted, and reach for better solutions for the problems we’re all facing, from the cost of living to the climate crisis,” Luke said.

Under the present voting system, millions of people cast ballots in seats where the result is effectively decided in advance, or see their preferred candidate lose despite significant support. Proportional representation would mean that the number of seats won by each party more closely matched the votes cast across the country.

Luke said that fairer votes would give more people a meaningful voice, while encouraging politicians to work together on the long-term challenges facing the country.

With the Government now established and the opportunity for reform on the table, Luke urged the Prime Minister to set out where he stands.

“The clock’s ticking,” he said.
