Bobby Dean visited Brixton Blood Donor Centre to give blood as part of a drive to encourage more people to donate.

NHS England called for one million people to donate blood to meet growing demand. Last year, over 17,000 Londoners answered this call in Brixton, leading to over 50,000 lives being saved or improved.

The Brixton Blood Centre opened in 2025, with the aim of making blood donation as easy as possible and has drawn in more donors with Black African and Black Caribbean heritage compared to the national average. This is massively important for patients with sickle cell disease, as people with Black African and Black Caribbean heritage are much more likely to carry the specific blood type used to treat the illness.

While Brixton’s centre serves the whole of South London, constituents in Carshalton and Wallington also have more local options to donate blood, including donation venues in Carshalton Beeches, St Helier, Sutton, Purley and Croydon.

Speaking after the visit, Bobby Dean MP said,

“It was my first time giving blood, but it was a really smooth and straightforward process. One blood donation can save up to three lives. So, if you’re able to, I’d encourage you to book an appointment to do the same.”
