Sutton Council will be recommending to strengthen its leadership team with the addition of a second Deputy Leader at no extra cost to the taxpayer at its annual Full Council meeting on 18th May.
The move will provide additional support to the Council to deal with Sutton’s Covid-19 recovery and the renewed focus on our work on climate change, improving sustainable transport, regenerating our town centre, delivering the London Cancer Hub, and providing high quality housing and schools for our residents.
Ruth Dombey, Leader of the Council said:
"I’m really proud of the way Sutton Council is responding to the Covid-19 crisis. We’re working well with local partners in helping our most vulnerable residents, supporting the NHS and the voluntary sector and providing support to local businesses.
The years ahead will be very difficult as we support our community to recover from the current crisis. I’m confident that this move will help us better respond to the new challenges, increased responsibilities and additional pressure on Council services as we navigate through the turbulent times ahead.
Our ambition is to make Sutton the safest, greenest borough and the best place to live, work and raise a family in London. This change will ensure we are focused on the key priorities that will get us there.”
Cllr McCoy will be Deputy Leader with special responsibility for Housing, Economy and Business and Cllr Abellan will be Deputy Leader with special responsibility for Climate Change and Sustainable Transport. They will share the Deputy Leader allowance so that there is no additional financial cost to the council.
