On Monday, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Sutton & Cheam Hina Bokhari sent an open letter to Paul Scully concerning the behaviour of Boris Johnson’s top aide Dominic Cummings and his recent trip to Durham during lock-down. In the letter, Hina urged Mr. Scully to join the ever-growing list of Tory MPs calling for Mr. Cummings’ resignation.
Unfortunately, on Tuesday, Mr. Scully has in turn decided to back Dominic Cummings in a statement on his website.
Following a YouGov poll released the same day, which showed that 71% of people think that Cummings did break lockdown rules, Scully is now facing renewed calls to reconsider his position on the matter and join his colleague in calling for Cummings’ resignation.
In response to the statement, Hina Bokhari said:
“Many people will be able to relate to the experience of losing a friend or family member during lock down, I know I can. However, if we are to prevent further loss of life, deal with this pandemic and get our country back on track, Mr Cummings will continue to be a distraction and his behaviour and lack of regret a poor example to many who will try to flout the lockdown rules. I hope Mr. Scully will reconsider his position on the matter and do the right thing by calling for Cummings to resign.”
