Stop pensioner TV licences being taken away!

From 1st August, free TV licences will be taken away from all over-75s except those receiving pensioner credit. Out of 11,250 pensioner families across Sutton currently getting a free TV licence, over 9,000 of these families will no longer be eligible.

As your local Lib Dem councillors, we are clear: Government must continue to provide the funds so these pensioner families don’t have their TV licence taken away.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the TV has been a lifeline for so many pensioners who’ve obeyed government’s instructions to stay at home.

In 2015, Tory ministers decided to stop the practice of central government paying for the TV licenses of over-75s. They instead made the BBC responsible for the costs, which put even more pressure on the BBC's already overstretched budget. As a result, the BBC has been forced to scrap free TV licences for nearly all over-75s.

Tory ministers must stop TV licences being taken away from 9,000 pensioner families across Sutton. Will you sign the petition?
