The Lib Dem Member for Carshalton and Wallington, Tom Brake, took advantage of a rare opportunity to speak in Parliament to slam the Housing and Planning Bill currently being considered by Parliament. His chance came when he submitted a petition signed by Sutton residents calling on the Government to stop the unfair Bill.
His speech followed a vote on the Bill when the Conservative Government rejected amendments proposed by the Lords that would help mitigate its most negative impacts. The Lords have since again rejected the Government’s proposals.
Tom said: ‘‘I would particularly like to thank all my constituents who signed the petition, and also Sutton Lib Dem Councillors Manuel Abellan, Jean Crossby, Jayne McCoy, Joyce Melican and Leader of the Council, Ruth Dombey, for helping to promote the petition.
“The Housing and Planning Bill not only fails to address the critical shortage of housing, but worse still could lead to a drop in the number of affordable homes.”
Tom continued: “This Bill will do nothing for millions who want to get on the housing ladder and will damage their prospects of finding decent affordable homes for rent.’’
The petition was signed by 360 Carshalton and Wallington residents. A further 240 signatures from Sutton residents will also be submitted. The Government is expected to respond to it shortly.
