Sutton appoints new Mayor for 2015-16

Cllr Muhammad Sadiq has been elected the new Mayor of Sutton.  He was elected unanimously at May’s Annual Council Meeting in Sutton Civic Centre. 

Cllr Sadiq said: “I am very honoured to have been elected as Mayor of Sutton which I accept with great gratitude. I am very grateful to my colleagues for giving me the opportunity to represent Sutton and to continue to serve the residents of Sutton, in my opinion the best borough to live in.”

Mixed general election results for Lib Dems in Sutton

Tom Brake, the sitting Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Carshalton and Wallington, defied the party’s poor national results in the 7 May general election and retained his seat. 

Tom defeated his Conservative opponent by more than 1,500 votes.

The Limes College rated outstanding by Ofsted inspectors

Just five years ago Sutton’s Liberal Democrat council invested heavily in converting a former school building in Robin Hood Lane, Sutton, into a new school for The Limes College, the borough’s pupil referral unit.  

Previously the students had occupied a group of inadequate and run-down classrooms on a nearby site.

Conservative Councillor resigns and backs Paul Burstow

Cllr Graham Whitham, Conservative councillor since 1978, agent for former Carshalton and Wallington MP Nigel Foreman, and leader of Sutton Conservatives until 2014, resigned from the Conservatives at Sutton Council’s meeting on Monday (20 April).

He has now come out in support of the Liberal Democrat candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow.

The brainchild of a local journalist, Roger Mills, Sutton Voice has a simple aim – to give a voice to the real community of the borough.

Free book offer by Sutton’s libraries

Sutton’s Library Service - for many years admired throughout the country for its innovative approach in encouraging reading - will be giving away free books on Thursday, 23 April.  

The giveaway is to celebrate World Book Night held annually to encourage book reading. The Enjoy Sutton shuttle bus will be trundling up and down Sutton High Street from 3pm, with libraries staff handing out free books.

Press Statement on Nick Mattey and the ERF

Cllr Nick Mattey has been suspended from membership of the Sutton Liberal Democrat Group. He has been suspended because of his recent public statement that: “I will not be lending my support to the Council on this matter and instead I am backing the Stop the Incinerator Campaign.” This means that for the time being he cannot describe himself as a Liberal Democrat councillor. The suspension is temporary pending an investigation.

Sutton among best in London for primary school place allocations

Sutton’s Liberal Democrat Council and the borough’s primary schools have once again achieved one of the highest preference rates in London for the allocation of primary school places. 

Parents in the borough have now been told which primary schools have made offers of places for the September intake.
