Ban on bonuses for water firm bosses “not enough” as Bobby continues campaign to tackle sewage dumping

Sutton Liberal Democrats are continuing to push for a ban on bonuses for Thames water bosses, with illegal sewage spills still happening in the local River Wandle.

It comes amidst news that the regulator Ofwat is to consult later this year on whether plans to ban bonuses on company executives could be introduced.

The government is proposing to block payouts to executives of firms that commit criminal acts of water pollution, starting with bonuses in the 2024-25 financial year from April.

However the Liberal Democrats’ Bobby Dean has called for a ban on water bosses’ bonuses now, regardless of criminal conviction.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Carshalton and Wallington, Bobby Dean said:

“Water companies have pumped sewage into the River Wandle on more than 25 occasions over the past three years, yet the Tories continued to let them get away with it.

“Instead of lining their own pockets with insulting bonuses, water companies need to clean up their own mess and stop dumping sewage into our waterways now.

“The Liberal Democrats led calls for a ban on water company executive bonuses over two years ago, but these latest government plans are not enough. Ministers must get a grip on this issue now and stop ripping off the public.”
