Lib Dem council offers free Christmas parking as boost for Sutton's traders and shoppers

As shoppers gear up for the festive season Sutton’s Liberal Democrat-led council is providing a shot in the arm to the local economy by providing free parking for motorists who use its car parks during weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

There will be no charge at the Gibson Road multi-story car park in Sutton town centre between 6am and 11.30pm on Small Business Saturday, 5 December.  Several other car parks across the borough are also involved in the initiative, including Carshalton High Street, Kingsway Cheam, and Wallington Library.

Free parking will also be available at these facilities over the following two weekends, 12 and 13 December and 19 and 20 December.  This means shoppers will benefit from three weekends of free parking allowing them to spend more time and money in local shops.

Cllr Simon Wales, Lib Dem Deputy Leader of Sutton Council and social enterprise champion, said:  “We’re proud that Sutton has so many great independent traders and it’s really important we support them to thrive.  We can do so by allowing free parking in our car parks so that people can shop for longer without having to rush back to their cars.”

These are the full details of which borough car parks will offer free parking and their opening times:

  • Gibson Road multi-storey, Sutton, SM1 2RF
  • Open between 6am – 11.30pm Saturday 5, 12, and 19 December and 9.30am – 6pm Sunday 13 and 20 December.
